Library and Information Science Student at Fikom Unpad Publishes Narrative Literature Review on the Application of Information Technology in Libraries

Muhammad Nabiel Farabi, a student of the Library and Information Science Program at the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran, has published a scientific article entitled “Research on the Application of Information Technology in Libraries through the Google Scholar Database: Narrative Literature Review.” The study was supervised by Rully Khairul Anwar, Siti Chaerani Djen Amar, and Evi Nursanti Rukmana.

The article was published in Jurnal Visi Pustaka Vol. 26, No. 2 (August 2024). This research aims to conduct a narrative literature review on the application of information technology in libraries by analyzing scholarly articles retrieved from the Google Scholar database. The selection process applied inclusion and exclusion criteria such as language (Indonesian and English), publication period (2013–2023), and focus on the implementation of information technology in libraries.

The findings reveal that information technology plays a crucial role in improving the efficiency and effectiveness of library services. Several technologies have been widely implemented, including library management systems, digitalization of collections, library portals, RFID, and self-checkout kiosks. These technologies support collection management, book lending services, loan extensions, and facilitate user access to library resources.

However, the study also identifies challenges, such as limited funding for information technology procurement and insufficient staff skills in managing information systems. Therefore, the research emphasizes the importance of proper management and maintenance of information technology, as well as the need to improve librarians’ competencies to maximize the benefits of IT implementation in libraries.

This study contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), by highlighting the role of information technology in enhancing library services, supporting education, and fostering innovation.
