According to Martodiredjo (2006), the Department of Library Science was firstly conducted at FIP-IKIP. Then, based of the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 0547/0/1983 which stated that the Department of Library Science must be conducted under the Faculty of Communication Sciences, the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, the Faculty of Cultural Literature, or the Faculty of Computer Science (UI). Therefore, the Chancellor of the University of Padjadjaran through Decree Number 78/1/01/06/a/1984 about the opening of the Library Science Department, Faculty of Communication Science opened the department and starting in the 1984/1985 academic year.
The Department of Library Science later changed its name to the Library and Information Science Study Program according to the Decree of the Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia Number 257/M/KPT/2017 about names of study programs in universities. The Library and Information Science Study Program is included in vocational education (profession and applied sciences) under Information Science, and the graduates hold the title of S.S.I (Bachelor of Information Science).
The Library and Information Science Study Program are one of the study programs that consistently develop library and information science in Indonesia. In its development, the Library and Information Science Study Program at the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran follows all changes according to the demands of information and communication technology.
