David Restu Mahesa, a student of the Library and Information Science Program, Faculty of Communication Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran, has published a scientific article titled “Library Collection Development Research on Google Scholar Database: A Narrative Literature Review.” This research was supervised by LIS Fikom Unpad lecturers, Siti Chaerani Djen Amar and Evi Nursanti Rukmana.
The article was officially published in Informatio: Journal of Library and Information Science, Vol. 5, No. 1 (January 2025). The study focuses on collection development in libraries, emphasizing the importance of adapting to technological advancements to meet users’ evolving information needs.
The research employed a narrative literature review method by analyzing 12 relevant references from the Google Scholar database. The analysis covered library management and collection development policy evaluation across several Asian countries.
The findings reveal variations in collection development practices: South Korea prioritizes digitalization of collections, Pakistan emphasizes academic needs, Indonesia faces budgetary challenges, India highlights digital literacy, while East Asian countries integrate international networking in their strategies.
The study also outlines the stages of collection development, including user needs analysis, policy formulation, selection, acquisition, weeding, and evaluation. Furthermore, collection development policies stress the importance of providing both print and digital materials while conducting regular evaluations to maintain quality and relevance.
This research concludes that collection development in Asian libraries is a strategic effort to address dynamic information needs and enhance societal literacy.
The study contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), by highlighting how libraries adapt to technological changes and strengthen access to relevant information.
