Bandung, 2025 — The Library and Information Science (PSI) Program, Faculty of Communication Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD), continues to demonstrate its commitment to cultural preservation through a read aloud activity featuring folktales from Sumedang. The event was led by PSI FIKOM UNPAD lecturer, Ute Lies Siti Khadijah, and attended by children from the local community.
Held in January 2025, the activity highlighted traditional folktales of Sumedang as a way to reintroduce local wisdom to younger generations. Using the read aloud method combined with creative media such as shadow play, the event successfully engaged participants while providing them with an enjoyable literacy experience.
The main purpose of this activity was to promote community-based cultural preservation, ensuring that regional stories are not only passed down orally but also presented in interactive and creative forms. In this way, children were not only able to listen to the stories but also experience and understand the moral values and cultural lessons they convey.
PSI FIKOM UNPAD emphasizes the importance of integrating literacy and culture as part of community education. Through this initiative, young generations are expected to develop pride in local culture and strengthen their awareness of the importance of preserving it.
This read aloud session of Sumedang folktales also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), by highlighting the role of culture-based education and community involvement in safeguarding local heritage.
The Library and Information Science Program at FIKOM UNPAD will continue to support similar initiatives in the future as part of its contribution to literacy development, education, and the preservation of local culture. (SNA)
