LIS FIKOM UNPAD Lecturer Publishes Guidebook on Flood Disaster Management in Libraries

Bandung, September 2024 — The Library and Information Science (PSI) Program, Faculty of Communication Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD), proudly announces the publication of a new book entitled Guidelines for Preparing and Managing Flood Disasters in Libraries, authored by Ute Lies Siti Khadijah, lecturer at PSI FIKOM UNPAD, together with her co-authors.

The book, published by the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia, addresses the growing risk of flooding in Indonesia, which frequently causes severe damage to library infrastructure and collections. It provides systematic guidance on disaster preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery tailored specifically for libraries.

With 84 pages of content, the guide covers legal frameworks, the establishment of disaster response teams, risk identification, and technical strategies for safeguarding various types of collections, including paper-based materials, magnetic media, photography, and digital records. The structure is designed to be practical and applicable for libraries of different types and sizes.

The publication highlights the importance of disaster risk management within library institutions, aiming to strengthen awareness and capacity in preventing and handling the impact of flooding. It also draws on both real-world experiences from past disasters in Indonesia and international standards for disaster management.

This book represents PSI FIKOM UNPAD’s tangible contribution to advancing knowledge in information science, communication, and disaster preparedness. It also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), by promoting disaster literacy and resilience.

Guidelines for Preparing and Managing Flood Disasters in Libraries is now available through the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia. It is expected to serve as a valuable reference for public libraries, school libraries, academic libraries, and special libraries across the country.
