BANDUNG, 2025 — A Community Service (PKM) program focused on environmental literacy has been successfully implemented in Kadujaya Village, Sumedang Regency, an area adjacent to the Jatigede Reservoir. This activity was initiated by Rizki Nurislaminingih, Nuning Kurniasih, and Saleha Rodiah, all three lecturers from the Library and Information Science (LIS) Study Program, Faculty of Communication Sciences, Padjadjaran University. This program aims to raise public awareness in managing and preserving the environment, while simultaneously utilizing the natural resources around the reservoir sustainably.
This activity was initiated due to the urgent need for local communities to improve environmental literacy to optimize utilization while maintaining environmental sustainability. While the Jatigede Reservoir offers positive potential, such as tourism that can boost the economy, it also has negative impacts such as waste accumulation and land degradation. Therefore, environmental literacy education is crucial for communities to live in harmony with nature and avoid the risk of environmental damage.
The program began with observations and interviews on August 15, 2024, to understand the community’s reading needs. Subsequently, on October 26, 2024, the Unpad team held a casual discussion with residents to raise awareness about the environmental impacts of the reservoir construction. As part of their support, the team also provided a grant of thematic reading materials tailored to various ages, from children to adults. These materials covered issues such as climate, nature conservation, flora and fauna, and waste management.
To facilitate access, the Unpad team also utilized Google Sheets to describe the reading collection. This electronic sheet lists the collection’s physical descriptions and themes, allowing residents and village library managers to easily find the information they need without having to go through a complicated account registration process.
The results of this program demonstrated an increase in environmental awareness among the Kadujaya Village community. Residents became more aware of waste and pollution issues, and they began to realize the importance of literacy to maintain a beautiful and healthy environment. The program also encouraged residents to implement the principles of lifelong learning, so they could continuously hone their knowledge and skills in environmental management.
Overall, this PKM program emphasizes that environmental literacy is key to addressing the challenges of climate change and maintaining sustainability. These findings not only inspire citizens to actively protect the environment but are also relevant to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) because it supports lifelong learning, and SDG 13 (Addressing Climate Change) because it encourages awareness and concrete action on environmental issues. The scientific article reviewing this program has undergone a rigorous peer-review process, was accepted on February 12, 2025, and officially published on February 13, 2025, in the scientific journal PENA ABDIMAS, Vol. 6 No. 1.
