Universitas Padjadjaran, December 15, 2025 — A student from the Library and Information Science (LIS) Study Program at the Faculty of Communication Sciences (FIKOM), Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD), has recently published a study highlighting the importance of collection preservation. Titled “The Implementation of Preservation on Library Materials at the Faculty of Nursing Library, Universitas Padjadjaran,” the research details how an academic library maintains its valuable collection to prevent damage.
The research was led by Moh. Alfito Triandra, an undergraduate student, under the guidance of lecturers Lutfi Khaerunnisa and Samson CMS. The primary objective of the study was to identify the preservation activities implemented by the Faculty of Nursing Library at UNPAD to care for their library materials. By preserving these materials, the library ensures the information within remains accessible to students and academics for years to come.
To gather information, the researcher conducted direct observation and an in-depth interview with a librarian at the Faculty of Nursing Library. This approach allowed the researcher to gain firsthand insight into the policies and daily practices used to maintain the condition of books and other documents. The study focused on the managerial and technical steps taken to prevent damage, which are key components of conservation and restoration.
The research findings revealed various preservation practices employed by the library. These range from preventive measures, such as controlling room humidity, to direct handling of materials that require repair. The article outlines that a systematic maintenance policy is crucial as a preventive action. In addition, the restoration of damaged materials is carried out with careful techniques and consideration.
The study emphasizes that the three main elements—preservation, conservation, and restoration—are interconnected in ensuring the longevity of a library’s collection. Preservation, as the broadest scope, covers all aspects of protecting the collection’s physical form and informational content. The implementation of a written policy is also considered essential for operational guidance.
This academic publication not only provides insights for librarians and practitioners in the field but also contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, the research is relevant to SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). By preserving library materials, the library supports access to education and ensures the safeguarding of cultural heritage and information for future generations.
The article has been published in the Libria Journal, making it an important reference source. It is hoped that these findings will encourage other libraries, both at the faculty and institutional levels, to enhance their preservation policies and practices. By doing so, libraries can continue to fulfill their function as sustainable centers of knowledge and collective memory.
