Kusnandar, a lecturer from the Library and Information Science Program, Faculty of Communication Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran, together with Samson CMS and Dr. Evi Nursanti Rukmana, has published a scientific article entitled “Preserving Memory, Sustaining Culture, Achieving SDGs: The Transformational Role of Libraries in the Modern Era.” The article examines the strategic role of libraries in safeguarding collective memory, preserving culture, and supporting sustainable development in the modern age.
The study was published in Jurnal Kajian Budaya dan Humaniora Vol. 7, No. 1, February 2025: 42–47. This publication reflects Fikom Unpad’s academic commitment to advancing research that bridges theory and practical contributions for societal development.
The article highlights three key roles of libraries: as custodians of collective memory, as preservers of culture, and as supporters of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in education, social inclusion, and information access. Through literature reviews and case studies, the research shows that libraries are not only centers of knowledge but also agents of change driving sustainable development.
The findings emphasize that libraries contribute through preservation and digitalization efforts, ensuring collective memory remains accessible for future generations. Furthermore, libraries play a significant role in promoting local culture and raising awareness of the importance of cultural diversity. Another crucial contribution is their support for SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
By providing equitable access to information, fostering digital literacy, and creating inclusive spaces for social dialogue, libraries help communities address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, and climate change. The article further underlines the importance of government and community support in strengthening the strategic role of libraries as pillars of sustainable development.
