Bandung, 2024 – Two students from the Library and Information Science (PSI) Study Program at Fikom Unpad, Muhammad Abyath Daffa Sumantri and Rafi Ramadhan, have successfully published a scientific article titled “Attraction Relationship with Enhancement English Language Skills at TBM Rita Home Library,” with the support of their supervising lecturers. This work examines the connection between a library’s appeal and the improvement of English language skills in children.
The research is a collaboration between the students and PSI Fikom Unpad lecturer Andri Yanto, M.I.Kom. This support demonstrates the university’s commitment to encouraging its students to actively participate in research that has both academic and social relevance, providing a tangible contribution to the community.
The study’s motivation stems from the global importance of English language proficiency. English is not just a tool for international communication but also a key indicator of critical thinking, problem-solving, emotional intelligence, and leadership abilities. Therefore, the research aimed to measure how a library’s attractive environment could motivate children to enhance their English language skills.
The researchers used a survey method, an observational approach described by Earl Babbie, where data is collected using sampling techniques. The chosen sampling technique was convenience sampling, which allowed the researchers to easily obtain samples from the available population.
The findings reveal a positive correlation between various library attraction factors—such as activities and facilities—and the improvement of children’s English skills. The study concludes that children who visit the Rita Home Library have a clear purpose: to improve their English language abilities.
This scientific article has been published in Jurnal Edulib, a journal that focuses on education and literacy. The publication is not only an academic achievement for the students and lecturer but also provides valuable insights for library managers and educational institutions on how to create an effective environment for language learning.
The research is highly relevant to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 on Quality Education and Goal 10 on Reduced Inequalities. By providing access to and a supportive environment for language learning, libraries can help bridge educational gaps and offer better opportunities for children in the future.
