Unpad Researches Environmental Literacy Trends, Boosts Global Environmental Awareness

BANDUNG – A collaboration between a student and lecturers from the Library and Information Science (PSI) Study Program at Fikom Unpad, Arslyn Aqylah Mu’yidarrahmatillah, Dr. Yunus Winoto, M.Pd., and Dr. Rully Khairul Anwar, has resulted in a significant research study titled “Mapping of Environmental Literacy Research: Bibliometric Analysis from 1971 to 2024.” Published in Bandung in 2024, this research explores the trends and developments in environmental literacy research amid a pressing global environmental crisis

The study was motivated by the urgency of environmental issues such as climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, which demand increased collective awareness and action. By analyzing scientific publication data from 1971 to 2024, the research aimed to map how the focus of environmental literacy research has evolved over time.

Using a bibliometric analysis method, the research team analyzed scientific publications to identify trends, collaboration patterns, and the most studied topics. The analysis revealed a significant increase in the number of research studies and international collaborations related to environmental literacy. This indicates that academic and researcher attention to this issue is growing and becoming more widespread globally.

The findings of this research emphasize the importance of integrating environmental literacy into education as a primary means of raising awareness and promoting concrete actions toward sustainability. Furthermore, the findings also highlight the crucial role of technological advancements in expanding access to information and supporting global movements for environmental conservation. Thus, environmental literacy serves as a bridge between knowledge and action.

The study affirms the need for synergy among education, policy, and technology to optimize environmental literacy. With this collaboration, it is hoped that public awareness of environmental issues can increase, which in turn will trigger more eco-friendly behavioral changes.

This scholarly publication has been featured in the Journal of Community Ecology and Science, making it a valuable reference for academics and practitioners in the environmental field. The research aligns with two Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). First, SDG 4: Quality Education, which stresses the importance of environmental education as an integral part of learning. Second, SDG 13: Climate Action, which requires increased human awareness and capacity for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
