Bandung, September 15, 2025 – Samson CMS, M.I.Kom., a lecturer from the Library and Information Science Study Program at the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Padjadjaran University, has established and developed the Taman Bacaan Masyarakat (TBM), or Grand Cinunuk Reading Community that located in the Grand Cinunuk Complex in Cinunuk Village, Cileunyi District, Bandung Regency. This reading garden aims to provide literacy access and serve as a center for community empowerment, especially for children and mothers with toddlers.
The establishment of Grand Cinunuk Reading Community was prompted by the social conditions in Cinunuk Village, particularly in the nearby neighborhood, which has a high population but a low level of education. Data shows that around 80% of the residents work as temporary laborers, and many young people have dropped out of school. This situation motivated Samson CMS, M.I.Kom., to take concrete steps to improve the quality of human resources through literacy and non-formal education activities.
Grand Cinunuk Reading Community doesn’t just provide books; it also offers a variety of services designed for the specific needs of the local community. These services include weekly reading sessions to foster a love of reading. Additionally, the reading community collaborates with the Posyandu (Integrated Health Post) program, taking advantage of meetings for mothers and toddlers to introduce early literacy activities. The Reading Community also has a “Reading Service to Nearby Schools” program, which aims to reach more children and expand its reach.
The development of Grand Cinunuk Reading Community is a continuation of the empowerment model that Samson CMS, M.I.Kom. successfully implemented in Cipatujah previously. Upholding the principle of empowerment based on local wisdom, this reading community focuses not only on reading activities but also on developing the community’s potential through various programs. Thus, the reading community is expected to be not just a place for reading, but also a center for productive activities that are relevant to the community’s needs.
The main goal of Grand Cinunuk Reading Community is to empower the community by improving literacy and skills. With an integrated approach, the reading community strives to build a strong educational foundation for children and provide a space for mothers to learn and grow. The hope is that this reading community can become a driving force for positive social change in Cinunuk Village, creating a more educated and empowered generation.
Through this initiative, Samson CMS, M.I.Kom. is committed to continuing to support the community in facing educational and economic challenges. Grand Cinunuk Reading Community is tangible proof that with collaboration and the right approach, social barriers can be overcome and the community’s hidden potential can be optimized.
