Bandung, 2025 — Research by Sari Suci Rahayu, Dewi Tresnawati, and Asep Saeful Rohman from the Library and Information Science Study Program at Fikom Unpad revealed that the 5th Teaching Campus Program was able to improve reading and numeracy literacy among elementary school students in remote areas.
The program is part of the Merdeka Belajar – Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) initiative launched by Indonesia’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. Through this program, university students are deployed to primary schools to assist in teaching, particularly in literacy and numeracy, which remain key challenges in many regions.
Findings show that students acted not only as teaching assistants but also as creative facilitators who introduced innovative learning methods. From visual media and educational games to simple technology-based approaches, these efforts successfully increased student engagement and interest in learning.
The program also provided reciprocal benefits for participating university students. They gained real-world teaching experience, improved communication and classroom management skills, and developed a deeper understanding of the challenges in primary education.
The research emphasizes that program success was made possible through collaboration and partnerships among universities, schools, government, and local communities. This aligns with SDG 4 (Quality Education), which promotes inclusive and equitable education, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), which highlights the importance of multi-stakeholder cooperation in strengthening education systems.
The researchers recommend expanding the program to more schools in remote and underserved regions, while also enhancing continuous training for participating students to ensure higher quality of learning outcomes.
With the Teaching Campus Program, Indonesia takes a significant step toward improving students’ literacy and numeracy, while shaping a young generation better prepared to face global challenges.
