Towards SDGs, UNPAD Lecturers Research the Transformational Role of Libraries in the Modern Era

Bandung, February 10, 2025 — Lecturers from the Library and Information Science (PSI) Study Program at the Faculty of Communication Sciences (FIKOM), Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD), have recently published a scholarly article highlighting the important role of libraries in the modern era. The research, titled “Preserving Memory, Nurturing Culture Towards SDGs: The Transformational Role of Libraries in the Modern Era,” explores how libraries are transforming from mere book repositories into agents of change in sustainable development.

This research is a collaborative effort by three PSI FIKOM UNPAD lecturers: Kusnandar, Evi Nursanti Rukmana, and Samson CMS. The background for this study is to examine how libraries can act as a repository of collective memory, a preserver of culture, and a key supporter in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The article specifically explores three main roles of libraries: as a repository of collective memory, a preserver of culture, and a supporter of SDGs. Through in-depth analysis, the researchers found that modern libraries no longer focus solely on physical collections but also on the digitalization and preservation of content to ensure cultural heritage is maintained and accessible to future generations.

Furthermore, the research highlights how libraries play an active role in cultural preservation. Through special programs and collections, libraries promote local culture and raise public awareness about the importance of preserving cultural diversity. This role makes libraries a community hub that connects the past with the present.

The most significant finding is the libraries’ contribution to achieving the SDGs. By providing equitable access to information, supporting digital literacy, and serving as a safe space for dialogue, libraries contribute to SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities). Libraries help address global challenges by providing inclusive resources and spaces for all segments of society.

The conclusion of this research affirms that libraries in the modern era are vital agents of change. They not only provide access to knowledge but also foster sustainable development. Support from the government and the community is crucial to strengthen this strategic role of libraries, enabling them to continue innovating and adapting.

The article has been published in the Jurnal Kajian Budaya dan Humaniora. It is hoped that these findings will provide a new understanding of the transformational role of libraries and serve as a reference for policymakers to continue strengthening library institutions as important pillars in preserving collective memory, nurturing culture, and creating a better future.
