Unpad LIS Lecturers Publish Article on the Role of Essay Writing Competitions in Developing Student Writing Skills

BANDUNG, 2025 – Nuning Kurniasih, M.Hum., Dr. Saleha Rodiah, and Fitri Perdana, M.I.Kom., lecturers from the Library and Information Science (LIS) Study Program at Fikom Unpad, have published a scientific article titled “EXPRESS YOUR IDEAS IN WRITTEN WORK THROUGH WRITING COMPETITIONS”. This article focuses on an essay writing competition organized by the Library and Information Science Student Association (Himaka) of Fikom Unpad. The competition was held in two sessions, from August to October 2024, with the aim of developing student writing skills.

This research was conducted with full support, where the lecturers participated as judges in the two competition sessions. Their participation was integrated into Community Service activities (PKM), demonstrating Fikom Unpad’s commitment to fostering collaboration between teaching and service.

Writing ability is an important competency for students, as it helps them pour out ideas, organize thoughts, and develop themselves. Participating in an essay writing competition provides a unique challenge for students to compete with other participants under strict deadlines and criteria. This competition provides an opportunity to measure writing ability based on assessment standards.

The essay writing competition used a Friendly Competition Model approach. This model encourages creative and innovative competition, team collaboration, constructive feedback, and appreciation for the participants. As judges, the lecturers not only gave scores but also criticized and provided input for improving the essays.

The assessment results showed that the competition participants could systematically write their ideas into an essay. However, there were some areas that needed to be developed, such as developing ideas through freewriting and brainstorming, presenting a thesis at the beginning of the essay, using clear language, and including credible sources. A special note was also given to two groups who participated in the first session, where they highlighted gender inequality as a cause of sexual violence.

This scientific article has been published in the Communnity Development Journal Vol. 6 No. 1, 2025. The findings of this research provide insight that competition can develop students’ mindsets in seeing opportunities and challenges to learn and hone their writing skills.

This research aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely point 4 on Quality Education and point 10 on Reduced Inequalities. The research shows that by providing a fair and open competition platform, lecturers can contribute to improving the quality of education and the development of student skills.
