Data Security in the Digital Age: Fikom Unpad Student Explores User Privacy in Digital Library Services

BANDUNG – A student from the Library and Information Science (PSI) Study Program at Fikom Unpad, Cindy Amelia Putri, has successfully published her scientific article titled “Information Security and User Privacy in Digital Library Services.” This research, conducted in Bandung in 2024, is the result of a collaboration with lecturers Dr. Rully Khairul Anwar, Dr. Siti Chaerani Djen Amar, M.A., and Evi Nursanti Rukmana, M.I.Kom., focusing on the security and privacy challenges that have emerged with the rise of digital libraries.

The evolution of libraries from conventional systems to digital platforms has had a major impact on how libraries provide services and how users access information. However, along with these benefits, digital libraries face new challenges related to data security and user privacy, such as the need for effective protection of personal data. This study aims to analyze security and privacy threats in digital library services and identify the implementation of security technologies and privacy policies in this context.

Cindy used a narrative literature review method to analyze 12 relevant references from various sources. This method allowed her to identify the security and privacy risks involved in digital library services, as well as how technologies and policies are implemented to address these issues.

The research findings show that virus attacks and brute force attacks are among the main security threats faced by digital libraries. To protect sensitive user data, the use of security technologies such as data encryption and firewalls is crucial. Furthermore, regulations and privacy policies like the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) are highly effective in helping libraries maintain the privacy of their users.

This research highlights the importance of managing information security and user privacy in digital library services. The conclusion of this analysis is that by implementing appropriate security technologies and adhering to strict privacy policies, libraries can ensure optimal protection of sensitive user data. This is vital for building user trust and the sustainability of digital services.

The scientific article has been published in the Media Pustakawan journal, making a valuable contribution to the literature in the field of library science. The research also aligns with two Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). First, SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, which emphasizes the development of resilient and secure digital infrastructure. Second, SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, which aims to build effective, accountable, and transparent institutions, including in the protection of personal data and privacy.
