Integrating Technology in Libraries: Towards Modern and Inclusive Services

Bandung, 2025 — A recent article by Drs. H. Dian Sinaga, M.Si, published in the book The Future of Libraries: Between Innovation and Technological Adaptation, highlights the crucial role of technology integration in library management. According to him, libraries are no longer merely repositories of books, but must transform into centers of literacy, education, and innovation to remain relevant in today’s digital society.

The study explains that technology integration can make library services more efficient, inclusive, and responsive. Digital transformation allows for wider access to information, faster services, and supports lifelong learning. Innovations such as digitized collections, digital library management systems, and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) are seen as essential in addressing the challenges of the modern era.

Drs. H. Dian Sinaga emphasizes that technology integration goes beyond digitization, encompassing interactive services such as e-learning, webinars, online courses, and assistive technologies like audiobooks. These innovations are expected to provide more personalized, accessible, and relevant learning experiences for digital-native generations.

Nevertheless, several challenges remain, including limited infrastructure, low levels of digital literacy among the public, inadequate regulations, and data security risks. Therefore, building librarian capacity and strengthening digital literacy training for users are key to ensuring the success of this technological transformation.

The integration of technology in libraries also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education). By leveraging technology, libraries can enhance inclusive and equitable access to education while reinforcing their role as community learning hubs.

Through his work, Drs. H. Dian Sinaga hopes that Indonesian libraries will continue to innovate and adapt to global technological advancements. In doing so, libraries will not only safeguard the knowledge of the past but also drive digital literacy and education in the modern era.
