Library and Information Science Fikom Unpad Student Examines Media Relations Strategy of Bandung City Communication and Information Services in Managing Publications During Crisis

Brilliant Awal, a student from the Library and Information Science (PSI) Study Program at Fikom Unpad, together with supervisors Prof. Susie Perbawasari and Dr. Elnovani Lusiana, has published a scientific article entitled “Bandung City Communication and Information Services Media Relations Strategy in Managing Publications in the Mass Media.” This research was published in Communicatus Journal (Sinta 2), Volume 8 Number 2 (2024), pages 144–158.

This publication focuses on the media relations strategies carried out by the Bandung City Communication and Information Services (Diskominfo) in response to the arrest of Bandung Mayor Yana Mulyana by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). The case received wide and intensive media coverage, requiring Diskominfo to manage publications strategically to maintain the government’s image.

The background of this research stems from the need to understand how government institutions handle communication crises in an era of information transparency. The main objective of the study is to analyze Diskominfo’s media relations strategies in sustaining a positive government image while maintaining public trust.

The study employed a descriptive qualitative method, using the Miles and Huberman model of data analysis, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Data were collected through documentation of media publications, press releases, and press conferences conducted by Diskominfo, as well as an analysis of its collaboration with mass media.

The findings reveal that Diskominfo implemented various strategies such as issuing press releases, organizing press conferences, and building cooperation with the media. These strategies proved effective in reducing the negative impact of media coverage and in shaping a positive narrative for the city government. The relationship established with mass media was mutually beneficial: media outlets gained easier access to information, while Diskominfo could ensure controlled messaging. However, the study also notes public concerns regarding the potential reduction of media independence in covering critical issues.

This article is relevant to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 16 on Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, and Goal 17 on Partnerships for the Goals. By highlighting the importance of balancing transparency, media independence, and government communication strategies, this study provides valuable insights into the management of public communication during crises.
