National Library of Indonesia Publishes Guidelines for Building Library Image

The National Library of Indonesia (Perpusnas RI) has officially published the Guidelines for Building Library Image as a new reference for library managers across the country. This guideline was developed in response to the rapid growth of information and communication technology, which challenges libraries to transform into modern and relevant centers of knowledge.

The guideline was prepared by a team of experts, including Asep Saeful Rohman, Agus Munawar, Elpa Hermawan, Vinta Sevilla, Irsan, Hartoyo Darmawan, Rizki Agung Gumilar, Yudhi Firmansyah, and Josan Kusuma, under the guidance of the Head of the National Library of Indonesia, Prof. E. Aminudin Aziz, and the Deputy for Library Resources Development, Dr. Adin Bondar.

The guideline was launched in Jakarta in October 2024, marking an important step for libraries in Indonesia in shaping a positive image among the public. It emphasizes the importance of communication, service promotion, and consistent branding strategies to strengthen public trust in libraries.

The background for issuing this guideline is the growing need to strengthen the position of libraries in the digital era. Libraries have often been perceived merely as book storage facilities. In reality, supported by technology, libraries can serve as active literacy spaces offering activities such as discussions, exhibitions, podcasts, and short videos that attract greater public engagement.

Through these guidelines, Perpusnas emphasizes the importance of integrated communication strategies, ranging from conventional promotions such as leaflets and face-to-face discussions to the use of digital media such as social media platforms, live streaming, and audio-visual content. With this approach, libraries are expected to build a strong, trusted, and beloved brand image in the eyes of the community.

The implementation of the guidelines is expected to increase public interest in visiting libraries, foster user loyalty, and encourage collaboration with various stakeholders to strengthen the literacy ecosystem. Moreover, this initiative supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), by reinforcing the role of libraries in providing inclusive and sustainable access to literacy.
