PSI Fikom Unpad Lecturers Publish Book on the Role of Community Reading Gardens in Literacy

Bandung, 2024 – Four lecturers from the Library and Information Science (PSI) Study Program at Fikom Unpad have published a book titled “Community Reading Gardens and the Strengthening of Information Literacy.” This book offers profound insights into the strategic role of community reading gardens (TBMs) in enhancing literacy and fostering a critical society.

The writing team consists of Dra. Sukaesih, Dr. Yunus Winoto, Andri Yanto, M.I.Kom., and Evi Nursanti Rukmana, M.I.Kom. All four are academics with expertise in the fields of library and information science. Their collaboration has produced a comprehensive, relevant, and substantial work for the development of TBMs in Indonesia.

The book was written to address the challenges and opportunities in the effort to create a more literate society. TBMs are not just viewed as places for borrowing books, but as centers for strengthening information literacy in the digital era. The book meticulously examines the concept of information literacy, from its definition and components to its evolution.

Specifically, the book outlines the history, functions, objectives, and management of TBMs, as well as their connection to public reading interest. The authors also provide a practical guide on the process of establishing and managing TBMs. Another key section is the strategy for strengthening literacy, which covers context, goals, challenges, and program evaluation.

In this book, the authors also position TBMs as hubs for literacy enhancement by discussing their dimensions, infrastructure, and management strategies. To provide inspiration, the book includes success stories of TBMs in various regions of Indonesia. Published by Unpad Press and Ilmu Informasi, the book serves as a credible academic reference.

The publication of this book is a tangible contribution from Fikom Unpad to society. The book is relevant to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 on Quality Education and Goal 10 on Reduced Inequalities. By providing a solid guide for TBM managers, the book is expected to help create more equitable access to education across all segments of society.
