PSI Fikom Unpad Student Publishes Scientific Article on the Relationship Between Media Literacy and LinkedIn Learning Access

Bandung, 2024 – A student from the Library and Information Science (PSI) Study Program at Fikom Unpad, Januar Ilyas, has published a scientific article titled “The Relationship Between Media Literacy and the Access Rate of LinkedIn Learning Online Education Courses Among Non-Postgraduate Students of the Faculty of Communication Sciences.” This publication is the result of research supported by PSI lecturers.

In his research, Januar Ilyas was guided by two supervisors, Dr. Edwin Rizal and Andri Yanto, M.I.Kom. This collaboration highlights PSI Fikom Unpad’s commitment to mentoring students in conducting independent research that is relevant to the development of digital and literacy skills.

The main objective of this study was to determine if there is a relationship between students’ media literacy and their frequency of accessing courses on LinkedIn Learning. Media literacy in this research was measured using the European Commission’s Individual Competence Framework, which includes three main indicators: technical usage skills, critical understanding, and communication skills.

To collect data, the study employed a quantitative method with a correlational approach. The research sample consisted of 65 students from the Faculty of Communication Sciences (Fikom) Unpad from the classes of 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2023, selected using a simple random sampling technique. The data was analyzed using a Chi-Square test to examine the strength of the relationship between variables.

The research findings were quite surprising. It was discovered that there is no significant correlation between Fikom students’ media literacy and their access rate to LinkedIn Learning online courses. Although sub-variables such as critical understanding and communication skills had a significant relationship with media literacy in general, the technical usage skills sub-variable did not show a significant relationship.

This scientific article has been published in Info Bibliotheca Jurnal Perpustakaan dan Ilmu Informasi, a credible publication in the field. The findings provide new insights for academics and practitioners into the complexities of student behavior in utilizing digital learning platforms.

The research is relevant to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 4 on Quality Education and Goal 9 on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. The study demonstrates that even when students have media literacy competencies, it does not necessarily drive them to actively use online learning platforms, highlighting the need for other strategies to increase student participation in digital education.
