The Importance of Digital Repositories in Supporting Students’ Academic Information Needs

Students from the Library and Information Science Study Program, Faculty of Communication Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran, conducted a study on the relationship between academic information needs and students’ information-seeking behavior in the Padjadjaran University Repository (Unpad Repository). The study highlights how the digital repository serves as a primary source of scholarly information used by students to support their academic activities.

The research applied a quantitative survey method with Pearson Product Moment correlation analysis. A total of 140 active students from the Library and Information Science Program, class of 2018–2019, were selected as respondents. The results showed a significant relationship between academic information needs and students’ information-seeking behavior in the Unpad Repository.

This study was carried out by Rengganis Giriwarna, Prijana, and Asep Saeful Rohman, focusing on the Padjadjaran University Repository. The findings were published in November 2023 in Edulib: Journal of Library and Information Science Vol. 13 No. 2.

The findings revealed that students who need up-to-date, routine, in-depth, or quick information tend to be more active in using the Unpad Repository. The greater their need for information, the more frequently they rely on the repository as a reference source to complete their coursework.

The study confirms that the Unpad Repository functions optimally as a provider of valid and relevant academic information, effectively supporting students in their learning. Furthermore, the research aligns with SDG 4 (Quality Education) by encouraging the improvement of academic literacy, and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) by emphasizing the importance of digital infrastructure in higher education.
