Universitas Padjadjaran. September 15, 2024 — Three lecturers from the Library and Information Science (PSI) Study Program at Universitas Padjadjaran (UNPAD) have launched a highly relevant book on current development issues. Titled “Developing Competitive and Sustainable Tourism,” the book offers a comprehensive guide for academics, practitioners, and policymakers on how to develop a tourism sector that is not only economically profitable but also environmentally and culturally responsible.

The book is a collaborative work by Dr. Yunus Winoto, M.Pd., Andri Yanto, S.Sos., M.Ikom., and Dr. Ute Lies Siti Khadijah, M.Si. The motivation behind this publication is the importance of a holistic understanding of tourism. The aim is to provide in-depth insights, from basic concepts to practical strategies that can be applied to various tourist destinations across Indonesia.

In the book, the authors thoroughly examine various aspects of tourism. They explain fundamental concepts, the key players, different types of tourism, and the essential components and resources required. Furthermore, the book explores tourism as an industry integrated with the creative economy, which is a major driver of growth in the modern era.

One of the book’s main highlights is its discussion on sustainable tourism. The authors elaborate on current tourism theories and formulate destination development strategies that balance economic growth with environmental protection and cultural preservation efforts. The book emphasizes that good tourism must provide long-term benefits for the local community and surrounding ecosystem.

This publication makes a significant contribution to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). By providing a framework for responsible tourism, the book is expected to help create quality jobs and advance cities and communities in a sustainable manner.

The book was published in 2024 and serves as a valuable reference for students, researchers, and practitioners in the tourism sector. With the insights presented, it can be a strategic guide for all parties involved in building a more advanced, competitive, and responsible Indonesian tourism sector.
