Attractive Architecture: Fikom Unpad Lecturer and Team Uncover the Role of Design in Sustainable Tourism

BANDUNG – A team of lecturers and researchers, including Dr. Rully Khairul Anwar from the Library and Information Science (PSI) Study Program at Fikom Unpad, have collaborated on a book chapter titled “Attractive Architecture: Designing Tourism Attractions.” Published in 2024, this work highlights the central role of architecture in creating engaging and sustainable tourism destinations. The research is grounded in the 5A concept of tourism and emphasizes that attractions must not only be physical elements but also be managed with an approach that prioritizes environmental and cultural conservation.

This book explores how architectural elements can create a unique identity and atmosphere that adds value and provides an authentic experience for tourists. Referencing various theories and previous studies, the book explains that well-designed architecture can influence a tourist’s aesthetic perception, comfort, and emotional engagement. Therefore, architecture is not just a container for tourist activities but also a tool for building a strong narrative for a destination.

The methodology used in this book is a comprehensive literature review. Various studies were analyzed to explore the role of architecture in shaping the tourist experience. This approach allowed the authors to synthesize findings from multiple sources and build a strong argument about architecture’s contribution to tourism appeal. This book is a book chapter and part of a larger publication titled “The Main Foundation of Sustainable Indonesian Tourism.”

The importance of this study also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). SDG 11 focuses on building inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities. Characterful and eco-friendly architecture is a key element in creating sustainable tourism destinations, which in turn improves the quality of life in these cities and communities.

Meanwhile, SDG 8 aims to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth and decent work. The development of tourism based on attractive architecture can draw more tourists, create jobs, and foster sustainable local economic growth. Thus, architecture becomes a crucial instrument not just for aesthetic beauty but also for the economic prosperity of communities.

This book was a collaboration among numerous researchers and lecturers, including Dr. Rully Khairul Anwar, Dr. Evi Novianti, Dr. Drs. Yunus Winoto, Dr. Ir. Dicky Muslim, Dr. Drs.
