Bridging Ancient Tradition and Information Science, LIS Fikom Unpad Researchers Design Bibliography for Gaok Art

This research specifically documents and designs a bibliography for the Gaok Oral Tradition, a cultural treasure that thrives in Kulur Village, Majalengka, West Java. The Gaok Tradition, also known as the Beluk art form, was born from the customs of agrarian societies in the past and is passed down through generations via oral storytelling.

The main objective of this research is to identify the elements, performance processes, and various information sources related to the Gaok Oral Tradition. Furthermore, the most significant output of this research is the creation of a systematic bibliographic framework, which serves as an integrated information center for the tradition. This effort is crucial for preserving the tradition amidst the currents of modernization.

To achieve its objectives, the research team applied a qualitative method with an action research approach. In-depth data collection was conducted through the study of articles, journals, existing documentation, as well as direct interviews with practitioners and community leaders who understand the intricacies of the Gaok Tradition.

The research results show several key findings:

  1. Tradition Validity: The elements and performance processes of the Gaok Oral Tradition were proven to be consistent with inherited customs.
  2. Bibliography Viability: The resulting bibliographic framework was deemed highly suitable and viable for use by information seekers, whether from academic circles, culturalist groups, or the general public.

This scientific work successfully bridges the gap between ancient oral tradition and modern information science. With a structured bibliography in place, it is hoped that the Gaok Oral Tradition can be more easily accessed, studied, and preserved by future generations, as well as paving the way for further research.
