Global Media Literacy Research Trends: LIS Fikom Unpad Students Map Publications in Scopus 2019–2023

Bandung, 2024 — Research by Farah Nabila Khairunnisa, supervised by Dr. Edwin Rizal and Drs. Yunus Winoto, successfully mapped global trends in media literacy publications in the Scopus database between 2019 and 2023. This study analyzed 1,046 articles from a total of 1,786 publications that were filtered based on document type and keywords.

The findings indicate a consistent increase in publication output, from 146 articles in 2019 to 268 articles in 2023. Using VOSviewer, the analysis identified 51 recurring keywords grouped into seven clusters. The study revealed that global media literacy research is still largely centered on misinformation and disinformation, while topics such as body image, privacy, teacher training, children, and adolescents remain underexplored.

The data further show that the United States leads media literacy publications with 281 articles, followed by Spain (148 articles), the United Kingdom (47 articles), Australia (44 articles), and Germany (42 articles). This suggests that research is still concentrated in developed countries, with relatively limited contributions from developing nations, including Indonesia.

The study aligns with SDG 4 (Quality Education) by promoting lifelong learning and critical literacy, and with SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) by emphasizing the role of media literacy in building informed societies, resilient against disinformation, and supportive of democratic governance.

The authors recommend that future research expand its focus to underrepresented topics, such as the role of formal education and teacher training in media literacy, as well as its impact on vulnerable groups like children and adolescents. Through this bibliometric mapping, media literacy is positioned not only as an academic discourse but also as a global strategy to foster critical, informed, and empowered societies in the digital age.
