Libraries in the digital era are undergoing a major transformation, shifting from traditional book repositories into centers of learning, innovation, and community empowerment. In his article, Drs. H. Dian Sinaga, M.Si. emphasizes that partnerships and the use of information technology are the main pillars in creating inclusive social libraries.
This vision, published in 2025 within the book The Future of Libraries: Between Innovation and Technological Adaptation, marks an important step in addressing the challenges of literacy and digital inequality in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape. Drs. Dian Sinaga calls on governments, educational institutions, the private sector, communities, and NGOs to collaborate in strengthening the capacity and quality of library services.
The concept is highly relevant across Indonesia, from urban centers to remote areas. Libraries can serve as bridges of knowledge, ensuring equal opportunities for all citizens to access information, education, and personal development resources.
Inclusive library transformation also responds to the urgent need to reduce digital inequality. Through collection digitization, online catalogs, e-learning platforms, and free internet access, libraries can deliver learning experiences that are more accessible, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of modern society.
Furthermore, this vision aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SDG 4 on quality education is reflected in the role of libraries as centers of literacy and lifelong learning. Meanwhile, SDG 17 on global partnerships is realized through cross-sector collaborations that strengthen libraries as pillars of social empowerment.
With clear strategies and strong support from multiple stakeholders, libraries can become drivers of literacy, education, and social inclusion. Drs. Dian Sinaga’s article underscores that the library of the future is an open space that empowers communities and creates equal opportunities for everyone.
