Lecturer at the Library and Information Science Study Program, Faculty of Communication Sciences, Padjadjaran University, Writes Book on “Documentary Film Services in Museums”

Bandung, 2024 — A newly published book titled “Documentary Film Services in Museums” by Fitri Perdana and H. Drs. Dian Sinaga, M.Si highlights the innovative strategy of the Asian-African Conference Museum in Bandung in strengthening its educational, recreational, and observational functions through its signature documentary film service.

The authors explain that documentary films serve as an important medium to relive the historic 1955 Asian-African Conference while spreading universal values such as cooperation, equality, and peace. As non-textual documents, these films provide visitors with a more interactive, emotional, and immersive learning experience.

The study identifies who the main audiences are: students, researchers, and the general public who seek to understand the nation’s history and international diplomacy. By offering this service, the museum shifts from being a mere storage of artifacts into becoming a true center of public learning.

The book also highlights when and why this innovation is crucial. Since the government launched the Visit Museum Year initiative, museums in Indonesia have been challenged to adopt creative approaches to attract visitors. Documentary film services are presented as a solution to reshape the outdated image of museums and make them more engaging.

Moreover, this initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) by expanding access to historical literacy, and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by positioning museums as inclusive public spaces that preserve cultural heritage.
