A team of lecturers from the Library and Information Science (LIS) Study Program at the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran, has published an important book focusing on the literacy movement. The book, titled “Taman Bacaan Masyarakat Dan Penguatan Literasi Informasi” (Community Reading Gardens and Strengthening Information Literacy), was written in 2024 by Dra. Sukaesih, M.Si, along with Dr. Yunus Winoto, M.Pd, Andri Yanto, S.Sos., M.Ikom, and Evi Nursanti Rukmana, S.Sos., M.Ikom.
The writing of this book was motivated by the fundamental idea that the quality of human resources is the primary capital for building a prosperous nation. In this context, education and literacy are crucial future investments. This book specifically aims to discuss the strategic role of Community Reading Gardens (Taman Bacaan Masyarakat – TBM) in the effort to strengthen information literacy within the community.
The authors assert that in the context of strengthening literacy, libraries and TBMs function as one of the “command centers.” This means that a TBM is not merely a place to borrow books, but rather a center of activity that actively designs and implements programs to improve the community’s information literacy skills, which are vital for facing global challenges.
Comprehensively, this book thoroughly examines various aspects related to TBMs and literacy. The discussion begins with the basic concepts of information literacy and its development in the digital era, followed by an explanation of the history, function, roles, and principles of effective TBM management in Indonesia.
Furthermore, the book also presents a practical guide on strategies for establishment, management, and methods for strengthening information literacy through TBMs as centers for community empowerment. Not only that, it also outlines various strategies, challenges, and a future vision for the literacy movement, enriched with success stories from various TBMs in Indonesia.
Thus, this book, “Community Reading Gardens and Strengthening Information Literacy,” is expected to become a primary reference source for TBM managers, literacy activists, policymakers, and the general public. This work provides a clear and inspiring framework on how the role of TBMs can be optimized to build a society that is intelligent, critical, and highly competitive.
