LIS Fikom Unpad Student Examines Role of ‘River Cleanup’ in Developing River Tourism

A student from the Library and Information Science (LIS) Study Program at the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran, Eldo Delamontano, has contributed to a book chapter that highlights environmental and tourism issues. The article, published in 2024, was written under the guidance of lecturers, Dr. Cipta Endyana, S.T., M.T., and Dr. Drs. Yunus Winoto, M.Pd.

The article within the book chapter is titled “THE ROLE OF THE COMMUNITY THROUGH RIVER CLEANUP ACTIVITIES AS A DEVELOPMENT FOR RIVER TOURISM DESTINATIONS.” This writing was based on concerns about the condition of rivers in Indonesia, which face serious threats from pollution by household waste, industry, and trash.

In his study, Eldo Delamontano explains that water is a vital element for life. However, the availability of clean water continues to decline due to pollution that not only adversely affects public health and the environment but also damages the potential of the river-based tourism sector. This problem requires collaborative solutions from various parties.

This article reviews various efforts that have been made, by both the government and the community. At the government level, programs such as clean water provision, sustainable sanitation, and river cleaning by the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas are highlighted. However, the main focus of this writing is the active role of the community as the frontline of river restoration.

The River Cleanup movement, or community-initiated river cleaning actions, becomes the main thesis in this article. This activity is seen not only as a solution to environmental problems but also as a strategic step for the development of river tourism destinations. A clean and well-maintained river will automatically increase its tourist appeal, which can then open up new economic opportunities for the surrounding community.

This written work asserts that community participation through tangible activities such as reforestation, education, and River Cleanups is the key to achieving sustainable development. This academic contribution from a Fikom Unpad student provides an important perspective on how environmental action can be integrated with the development of the creative economy in the tourism sector.
