Sustainable Accommodation Practices in Ciletuh-Sukabumi Geopark Drive Economic Growth and Responsible Consumption

Bandung, 2024 – A study published in the book 5A: Foundations of Sustainable Tourism in Indonesia highlights the urgency of adopting sustainable tourism practices in the accommodation sector at Ciletuh-Sukabumi Geopark. Conducted by Jimmy Ruben Sihombing, Dr. Kurniawan Saefullah, and Dr. H. Edwin Rizal from Universitas Padjadjaran, the research emphasizes how environmentally and socially responsible practices can enhance visitor satisfaction while strengthening the competitiveness of the local tourism industry.

The findings reveal that tourists are increasingly aware of sustainability issues and tend to prefer accommodations that implement waste management, energy efficiency, use of local products, and community empowerment programs. However, the implementation of these practices still faces challenges such as financial constraints, lack of regulation, and limited awareness among business operators.

On the other hand, sustainable accommodation practices provide economic benefits. Beyond reducing operational costs through energy and waste efficiency, they also build visitor loyalty, thereby ensuring long-term business resilience. This demonstrates that tourism can preserve the environment while contributing to inclusive local economic growth.

The study underlines the importance of collaboration among government, business operators, local communities, and tourists. Stronger regulations, economic incentives, and educational campaigns for both operators and visitors are needed to accelerate sustainable practices in Ciletuh-Sukabumi Geopark.

These findings align with SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by promoting resource efficiency and sustainable waste management, while also supporting SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) through job creation, local community empowerment, and the development of a sustainable tourism-based economy.

With concrete steps toward sustainability, Ciletuh-Sukabumi Geopark has the potential to become a model destination in Indonesia, balancing economic, social, and environmental priorities for future generations.
