Unpad Researches Intercultural Communication Trends, Reveals Global Dynamics

BANDUNG – A significant collaboration between a lecturer and a student from the Library and Information Science (PSI) Study Program at Fikom Unpad, Dr. Yunus Winoto, M.Pd., Dr. Rully Khairul Anwar, and Syahla Nurlaeli Rahmi, has resulted in a research study titled “BIBLIOMETRIC MAPPING OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION RESEARCH.” This research, conducted in Bandung in 2024, focuses on an in-depth analysis of the trends and dynamics of intercultural communication research amid the current wave of globalization.

The study is based on the premise that with the increasing global interaction, intercultural communication has become a more crucial topic. The rapid growth of direct contact between various countries and cultures, which is not limited to a personal level but also involves organizations and international institutions, has created a need to understand these communication dynamics more deeply. Therefore, this research aimed to map the trends in intercultural communication research through a bibliometric approach.

Using a bibliometric analysis method, the researchers analyzed scholarly publication data to identify the main patterns in this field. The results show that the phrase “intercultural communication” is the most relevant in article titles, appearing 1110 times. Meanwhile, the most common words in article titles are “communication,” “intercultural,” “student,” and “language,” reflecting a strong research focus on these aspects.

The research findings also highlight leading publications in this field, such as the Journal of Language and Intercultural Communication, which has published 107 articles and has been cited 1105 times. Additionally, Will Baker from the University of Southampton, UK, was identified as an author with a high scholarly impact, with his 7 works being cited 299 times. The most common research focuses in this area include communication, competence, language, culture, education, development, and identity.

This research provides a thorough mapping of the dynamics of intercultural communication research to date. Through this analysis, it is clear that intercultural communication continues to be a relevant and evolving topic, showing the importance of cross-cultural understanding in various sectors of life. This scholarly publication has been featured in the Signal Journal, making it a valuable contribution to the literature in the field of communication science. The research is relevant to two Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). First, SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), which emphasizes the importance of inclusivity in urban communities. Understanding intercultural communication is key to creating harmonious and inclusive cities. Second, SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), which encourages global collaboration. The increase in research and international collaboration in this field is a direct manifestation of efforts to achieve shared global goals.
