Media Literacy and Access to LinkedIn Learning: Research by LIS Fikom Unpad Students Reveals Challenges in Digital Education

Bandung, 2024 — A recent study conducted by Januar Ilyas, Edwin Rizal, and Andri Yanto from Universitas Padjadjaran explores the relationship between media literacy and students’ access to LinkedIn Learning online courses. The research involved 65 undergraduate students of the Faculty of Communication Sciences (2019–2023 cohorts) using a quantitative correlational approach.

The study refers to the Individual Competence Framework by the European Commission, which includes three key indicators of media literacy: technical skills, critical understanding, and communication skills. Findings show that Unpad students generally possess a high level of media literacy, with most categorized as Advanced.

Interestingly, statistical analysis using the Chi-Square test revealed no significant correlation between media literacy levels and the frequency of LinkedIn Learning course access. In other words, students with advanced media literacy do not necessarily engage more with online learning platforms.

The only sub-variable showing significant influence was technical skills. Students with higher technical competencies were more likely to access LinkedIn Learning, particularly courses related to practical skills such as content creation and SEO. Meanwhile, critical understanding and communication abilities did not directly affect course access.

This study highlights a crucial issue of inequality in digital education adoption, where not all students maximize online learning opportunities despite having high media literacy. It aligns with SDG 4 (Quality Education), which emphasizes equal access to learning, and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), which calls for closing educational and technological gaps among students.

The researchers suggest that lecturers actively promote LinkedIn Learning by integrating its materials into course syllabi. This way, students’ advanced media literacy can be translated into concrete academic and skill development outcomes.
