Jatinagor, 12 November 2022 – Library and Information Science Study Program students carry out Preservation Practicum activities at the National Library of Indonesia. In total, 213 students of the 2020 and 2021 classes, in the assignment letter by the Dean of the Faculty of Communication Sciences Unpad, joined. This activity lasted over two days on November 8 and 9, 2022. Several laboratories are used for practicum activities. However, before heading to the laboratory, students are divided into several groups first. According to Dr. Ute Lies Khadijah, S.Sos., M.Si as the Lecturer of the class, visits the laboratory start from conservation, reprography, reproduction, maintenance, and repair of library materials, binding of library materials, digital transformation, and microfilm. In addition, some Supervisors also participated in the activity, and there is Saleha Rodiah, S.Sos., M.Si, and Samson CMS., S.Sos., M.I.Kom.
During the activity, there were no obstacles faced by the students. Everything went well. Most of the students were excited because they could find out the behind-the-scenes process of the library directly. Some participants who attended also gave different impressions, as Dr. Ute Lies Khadijah, S.Sos., M.Si conveyed, “Students are very enthusiastic about visiting and practicing in every laboratory. It opens up new knowledge about preservation activities, not only about library materials. And get real experience seeing the performance of librarians in the field who have been very dedicated to maintaining and preserving Indonesian knowledge from various forms of collections.”
Also, Diaz Ilyasa, a student from the class of 2021, showed his impression while participating in this activity was “interesting, especially in the encapsulation, mending, media transfer, and bookbinding activities carried out by the National Library. The series of conservation and library collection restoration activities carried out by the National Library was insightful and made me know more about the duties of librarians in the collection preservation scope. Apart from that, he also said that the National Library Preservation Practicum encouraged students and provided an overview in choosing a career path for librarians in the future.
Meanwhile, Januar Ilyas from the class of 2020 expressed different impressions after participating from the beginning to the end. He thinks this practicum activity provided a new, unique, and fun experience. And most important is gained knowledge about preservation activity practitioners that are given a trial attempt every time from the theory that has been obtained. He also said that he hoped the future practicum activities could be re-implemented by students at least once during the lecture period.
This activity is a Tridharma activity carried out in line with the strategic planning of the university, faculty and in line with the applicable curriculum in the library and information science study program.
