PSI FIKOM UNPAD Lecturers Contribute to “The Future of Libraries” Book Chapter

Banyumas, 2025 – A group of lecturers from the Library and Information Science (PSI) Study Program, Fikom Unpad, have contributed scientific articles to a national book chapter titled “The Future of Libraries: Between Innovation and Technology Adaptation.” This collaborative work serves as an academic response to the shifting role of libraries in the digital era, highlighting the critical need for innovation and technological adaptation to keep libraries relevant as key knowledge centers.

The contributors to this book include prominent figures from the PSI Fikom Unpad department: Dr. Hj. Tine Silvana Rachmawati, M.Si, Prof. Dr. Hj. Ninis Agustini Damayani, M.Lib, Prof. Agus Rusmana, Drs. H. Dian Sinaga, M.Si, Fitri Perdana, S.Sos, M.Ikom, Encang Saepudin, S.S., M.Si, Dr. Drs. Yunus Winoto, M.Pd, Dr. Iwan Koswara, M.Si, and Dra. Hj. Kismiyati El Karimah, M.Si. Their involvement demonstrates Fikom Unpad’s commitment to advancing literacy and innovation in the field of librarianship.

The book specifically explores how libraries are transforming amidst rapid developments in information technology. No longer just physical repositories, libraries have evolved into dynamic digital information hubs. The rise of technologies like artificial intelligence, big data, and the Internet of Things (IoT) necessitates that libraries continually adapt to meet the changing information needs of the public.

A key focus of the book is the digitalization of collections and online access. Digital libraries minimize geographical barriers to accessing knowledge, thereby promoting inclusivity in education and research. However, the book also addresses the challenges of technology adaptation, such as the digital divide, infrastructure readiness, and the crucial need for information literacy.

The role of librarians is also changing. They are no longer just collection managers but have become facilitators who guide users in finding, selecting, and understanding valid information. The book, therefore, emphasizes the importance of enhancing librarians’ skills in information technology and data management to support library modernization.

Ultimately, through continuous innovation and proper technological adaptation, libraries will remain a cornerstone of an educated global society. The contributions of these PSI Fikom Unpad lecturers to this book are a testament to their dedication to shaping the future of libraries in Indonesia. This work also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 4 on quality education and Goal 17 on partnerships for the goals.
