Unpad LIS Students Study the Development of Literacy Programs in School Libraries Through the Google Scholar Database

BANDUNG, 2023 – Tika Amalia, a student of the Library and Information Science (PSI) Study Program at Fikom Unpad, along with LIS lecturers Evi Nursanti Rukmana, M.I.Kom., Dr. Rully Khairul Anwar, and Dr. Siti Chaerani Djen Amar, M.A., have written a scientific article entitled “Development of Literacy Programs through the Google Scholar Database in School Libraries.” The article was published in the journal LIBRARIA: Jurnal Perpustakaan, Volume 11, Number 2, in December 2023.

This research aims to review literacy programs in school libraries using the Google Scholar database. The method used is a narrative literature review, which is to collect and summarize the essence of 10 scientific articles published between 2013-2023.

The research results conclude that literacy programs in school libraries have a very important role in increasing students’ interest in reading. This program can improve students’ reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. Some effective programs include the habit of reading before class, writing competitions, and book reviews. Displaying students’ literacy works in the school area can also make students more enthusiastic and interested.

This research also highlights the central role of librarians as facilitators who are responsible for designing and implementing interesting and effective literacy activities. Librarians must have various competencies, such as knowledge of information technology, individual skills, and the ability to work together in a team.

This research is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially point 4 on Quality Education and point 10 on Reduced Inequalities. By focusing on the development of literacy programs in school libraries, this research contributes to the provision of quality, inclusive, and equitable education for all.
