LIS Fikom Unpad Research team Maps the Development of Radio Broadcasting Literature Through a Bibliometric Study

A team of researchs from the Library and Information Science (LIS) Study Program at the Faculty of Communication Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran, has published a scientific article that maps the global research landscape of radio broadcasting. The article, published in 2025, was written by Rully Khairul Anwar, along with Asep Zainal Abidin and Yunus Winoto, titled “A Bibliometric Study on the Development of Radio Broadcasting Literature.”

This research was motivated by the status of radio broadcasting as a significant communication medium in modern society. Since its emergence in the early 20th century, this field has continuously evolved along with technological advancements, as has its academic study. Therefore, the research team deemed a bibliometric analysis essential to identify trends, patterns, and advancements that have been achieved in the scientific literature on radio broadcasting.

To achieve this objective, the study applied a quantitative methodology using bibliometric techniques. The research team collected data from the internationally reputable database, Scopus, which was then analyzed using various indicators such as author productivity, journal analysis, country contributions, and research topic trends.

The results of this study revealed several interesting findings. One relates to author productivity, where the majority of authors publish only a few articles, indicating a tendency for low productivity in this field. Nevertheless, some authors were noted to have high citation counts. In terms of journal quality, the “Journal of Radio and Audio Media” is recognized as one of the best. Meanwhile, the United States leads as the foremost country in the number of academic publications on radio broadcasting.

The study also successfully identified current topic trends in radio broadcasting research. The four main trends that emerged are “radio broadcasting,” “radio,” “television broadcasting,” and “digital radio.” This finding provides a clear picture of the direction and focus of research in the modern era.

Based on the existing findings, the researchers provide important recommendations for the future advancement of this field. According to them, increasing author productivity and fostering cross-institutional research collaboration are crucial. These steps are believed to be able to drive more rapid innovation and development in radio broadcasting studies globally.
